Day-by-Day Highlights

Each day of our journey began rooted in prayer, meditation on the scriptures, and deep reflection. This spiritual practice grounded us, opened our hearts, and prepared us to fully engage with the people and experiences that followed.

Day 1 – Arrival in Guatemala City

Day 1 - Arrival in Guatemala City

We arrived late evening in Guatemala City, where we were warmly welcomed by staff from Planting Seeds International, our local partners and guides throughout the trip. After a long day of travel, we settled into our hotel to rest and prepare our hearts and minds for the transformative journey ahead.

Day 2 – Immersion in the Heart of Zone 3

We began our day with a powerful cultural immersion experience led by the mamas of Project Olas, a women-run social enterprise based in Guatemala City. Through a beginner Spanish lesson and warm conversation, we learned how these women are building lives of dignity and connection by offering virtual language instruction across the Americas.

From there, we visited Planting Seeds International’s Community Centre, located in the heart of Zone 3, Guatemala City’s landfill district. This vibrant, community-led space provides safe and accessible, play-based learning for children and families who live and work in the surrounding landfill area.

At the centre, we met Fredy, a Planting Seeds board member who shared his incredible story of how education changed his life and how he now devotes himself to advocating for educational access for children in rural areas. We also spent time with Diego and Sophie, dedicated staff who embody the spirit of radical hospitality. They opened our eyes to the daily work of this community — one that teaches, welcomes, and uplifts with unwavering love.

Day 3 – Sabbath Rest and Exploration in Antigua

With Sunday as a day of rest, we embraced the opportunity to slow down and absorb the beauty and spirit of Antigua Guatemala. We began with Holy Mass at St. Joseph Cathedral where we were surrounded by the warmth of the local Guatemalan community. Their hospitality reminded us that faith transcends borders and languages.

The rest of the day was spent exploring the historic city. A guided walking tour taught us about Antigua’s colonial past, resilience through earthquakes, and cultural significance. We hiked to Cerro de la Cruz, a large cross perched on a hill overlooking the city and framed by towering volcanoes — a breathtaking moment of perspective and peace.

Among the many highlights: praying at the tomb of Saint Hermano Pedro, tasting incredible Mayan cuisine, and clocking over 20,000 steps in the company of friends, laughter, and awe.

More to come!
