In January of 2017, the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops issued a preparatory document for the XV Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops which will take place in October of 2018. The theme for the Synod is, “Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment.” The Diocese of Hamilton warmly welcome young people aged 16-29 to share their voice with the Universal Catholic Church and to offer insight on how we as a Diocese can be supporting our youth along their faith journey.
In March 2018 the Vatican invited young people from different faiths, countries and backgrounds to join together in Rome for a Pre-Synodal Meeting. There young people had the opportunity to share their own thoughts and experiences of being a young person in the world today. The young people engaged with one another, actively listened to the lived realities of their peers and collaborated to create a working Pre-Synodal Document to present to the Holy Father, which in turn inspired the Instrumentum Laboris which was then given to the Synodal Bishops.
Finally in October 2018, Bishops from all across the world joined together for the The Synod on Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment. These Bishops, young people and Pope Francis spent 25 days together, listening and discussing the realities of young people, the faith, and vocational discernment. From this meeting a “Final Document” was written by the Bishops to share with Pope Francis to assist him in writing the Apostolic Exhortation – Christus Vivit.
In April 2019 Pope Francis published the Apostolic Exhortation – Chrisitus Vivit which was written to the Young People and Entire People of God.
