CCCB: The Evangelizing Mission of the Church in Canada

The Episcopal Commission for Doctrine of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has released a new document entitled “The Evangelizing Mission of the Church in Canada”, a reflection inviting Catholics to rediscover and share the Good News in today’s Canadian society.
The document opens with Pilate’s enduring question, “What is truth?”, and presents Jesus Christ as the answer to humanity’s deepest questions about identity, purpose, freedom, and hope. It describes evangelization not as the transmission of an idea, but as the introduction of others to a person: Jesus Christ.
“Knowing Jesus allows us to see ourselves, and everything around us, in a new light so that the answers to our most fundamental questions become visible. This means that knowing him is something that every human being needs; it is not knowledge to be kept to ourselves.” (The Evangelizing Mission of the Church in Canada, n. 4).
The document also addresses important questions about how evangelization is carried out. It stresses that the Gospel must be proposed with respect for freedom and conscience, never through pressure, manipulation, or coercion.
