Rite of Election Celebrated at the Cathedral Basilica

2026 Rite of Election

Date posted on March 2, 2026

On the First Sunday of Lent (February 22, 2026), catechumens and candidates from across the Diocese of Hamilton gathered at the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King for the Rite of Election, celebrated by Bishop Joseph Dabrowski, CSMA.

Approximately 350 individuals preparing to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil stood before the Church to be formally recognized as the Elect — those chosen by God and called to continue their journey of conversion.

The Rite of Election marks an important milestone in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), as catechumens preparing for Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist publicly express their desire to enter fully into the life of the Church.

A Diocesan Celebration of Faith

In his homily, Bishop Dabrowski welcomed those gathered and reflected on the significance of the day:

“On the First Sunday of Lent, we gather as one diocesan family for a moment of profound grace. Today, catechumens and candidates from across our parishes stand before the Church. For many of you, this may be your first time in the Cathedral — welcome. This sacred place becomes part of your faith journey.”

He reminded the Elect that their formation has been more than intellectual learning:

“Your instruction has not been merely intellectual. You have been formed by prayer, by Scripture, by the witness of believers, and by the quiet action of the Holy Spirit in your hearts. Today, the Church publicly affirms what God has already begun.”

The Bishop expressed gratitude for priests, deacons, RCIA teams, catechists, sponsors, parish leaders, and family members who accompany the Elect on their journey of faith.

“Behind every name in the Book of the Elect is a story — your story — shaped by culture, family, hopes, doubts, and dreams. And within that story, God has been at work.”

Looking Ahead to Easter

Those enrolled in the Rite of Election will continue their final period of preparation throughout Lent, culminating in the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil in their home parishes.

The Diocese will also gather to celebrate the newly initiated Catholics at the annual Mass with New Catholics, which will take place at the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King on Saturday, April 11, at 5:00 p.m.

Please pray for all our Elect and candidates during this sacred season as they prepare to receive the sacraments and enter fully into the life of the Church.
