Highlights from 2025 Mass of Chrism

Date posted on April 29, 2025

On Monday, April 14, 2025, the Diocese of Hamilton gathered for the annual Mass of Chrism at the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King. The celebration began at 2:00 p.m., bringing together Bishop Douglas Crosby, OMI, and the priests of the Diocese in a beautiful manifestation of the communion that exists between the Bishop and his college of priests.

At this Mass, the Bishop consecrated the Sacred Chrism and blessed the Oil of Catechumens and the Oil of the Sick. These oils will be used throughout the coming year in the sacramental life of our parishes. The Holy Chrism, richly perfumed and consecrated by the Bishop, is essential to the life of the Church: it is used to anoint the newly baptized, to seal the faithful in Confirmation, and to anoint the hands of priests and the heads of bishops at their Ordination. It also sanctifies churches and altars at their dedication. The Oil of Catechumens brings strength to those preparing for Baptism, while the Oil of the Sick offers comfort and healing to those suffering from illness.

Representatives from parishes across the Diocese participated in the solemn presentation of the oils, highlighting the unity of the Body of Christ gathered to worship God in spirit and in truth:

  • Oil of the Sick: Deacon Paul Klassen and Mr. Garth Brown from St. Matthew Parish, Oakville.

  • Oil of Catechumens: Deacon Joseph Di Loreto and Mr. Jeff Dewaele from Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, Stoney Creek.

  • Oil of Sacred Chrism: Deacon Joonbin Lim and Ms. Shelby Wagner from Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, Brantford.

A special moment of joy during the Mass was the announcement that Reverend David Reilander has been named Chaplain of His Holiness by Pope Francis, with the title of Monsignor. The honour, conferred on February 11, 2025, recognizes Monsignor Reilander’s dedicated service, particularly his leadership as Director of Catholic Missions in Canada. The official parchment of the appointment was presented to Monsignor Reilander during the Mass. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Monsignor Reilander on this well-deserved recognition!
