October 27: Day of Fasting, Penance and Prayer for Peace in the World

Date posted on October 26, 2023

His Holiness, Pope Francis has declared that Friday, October 27 is to be a day of fasting, penance and prayer for peace. This day is a response to the Israel-Hamas war and a call for peace in the world. This invitation has been extended to people of all Christian denominations, other religions, and all those who have a heart for the cause of peace. “Our thoughts turn to Palestine and Israel. The number of victims is rising and the situation in Gaza is desperate” (Pope Francis).

A Vigil will take place at 6 p.m. Rome time in St. Peter’s Square (12:00 p.m. EST), where an hour of prayer in a spirit of penance to implore peace in our time, in this world, will take place.

We encourage you to join your local Parish and all in the Diocese in spirit during this time, offering your own prayers for peace. Although a specific fast or penance has not been given, Catholics are invited to fast in whatever capacity they can on October 27th, joining their sacrifice to the suffering of Christ for people affected by the war.

Jesus, Prince of Peace, hear our prayer.
