On Monday, April 3rd, 2023, the Mass of Chrism was celebrated at the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King in Hamilton. The principal celebrant was His Excellency, Bishop Crosby, OMI, with concelebrants including Bishop Emeritus Anthony Tonnos; His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Collins, Archbishop Emeritus of Toronto; Auxiliary Bishop Wayne Lobsinger; as well as his college of Priests.
During the Mass, the Bishop consecrates the Holy Chrism and blesses the other oils, and manifests the communion of Priests with their Bishop.
The Holy Chrism consecrated by the Bishop is used to anoint the newly-baptized, to seal the faithful in Confirmation, and to anoint the hands of Priests and the heads of Bishops at their Ordination. In addition, the Chrism is used in the rites associated with the dedication of churches and altars. The Oil of Catechumens is used to bring strength to those preparing for Baptism. The Oil of the Sick is used to bring comfort and support to the sick in their infirmity. The participation of representatives from parishes throughout the Diocese displays the unity of the body of Christ which gathers to worship God in spirit and in truth.
Anointed with Sacred Chrism, presented by Reverend Mr. John Ha and Mr. Jamie Walter, the faithful share in the life of Christ — the Anointed One — and are sealed with God’s Spirit for witness and service. Anointed with the Oil of Catechumens, presented by Reverend Mr. Carlos Diaz and Ms. Divya Nagia, those preparing for Christian initiation are strengthened to turn away from sin and deepen their resolve to know Christ. Anointed with the Oil of the Sick, presented by Reverend Mr. Paul Niesiobedzki and Mr. Adam Stankiewicz, the infirm are forgiven their sins and restored to health; they are given strength to bear their sufferings in union with Christ.
