Bishop Gerard P. Bergie was born in Hamilton on 4 January 1959. He attended St. Vincent de Paul Elementary School and Cathedral High School. During his childhood he was an avid hockey player, as well as an altar server in his home parish of Sts. Peter and Paul. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Hamilton on 12 May 1984 by Bishop Tonnos. He served in several parishes in the Diocese of Hamilton including St. Margaret Mary, St. Francis Xavier, and Our Lady of Lourdes. On 24 August 2005 Rev. Bergie was ordained as Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Hamilton and Titular Bishop of Tabae. Bishop Bergie was also appointed as the Chancellor of the Diocese, acting in this role from 1994–2001 and then from 2005–10. Bishop Bergie holds a Masters of Divinity degree from the University of Western Ontario and a licentiate in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. He has also served on the Diocesan Marriage Tribunal. On 9 November 2010 Bishop Bergie was appointed the fifth bishop of the Diocese of St. Catharines.
