THE SISTER ANNE ANDERSON AWARD, a bursary to be granted annually to a St. Joseph’s Health System team member, will support a journey to “CENTRE INTERNATIONAL ST. JOSEPH”, the founding home of the Sisters, in Le Puy-en-Velay, France; or another educational pursuit to continue the healing mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph. ARCHBISHOP JAMES HECTOR MACDONALD, C.S.C., having celebrated his 100th birthday on April 28, 2025, died on May 30, 2025, at Hotel Dieu Hospital. St. Catharines, ON. Ordained a priest of the Holy Cross Community, on June 29, 1953, he was named Auxiliary Bishop of Hamilton on February 15, 1978. He subsequently served as Bishop of Charlottetown, and Archbishop of St. John’s. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 7th at 11:00 a.m. May he rest in peace!
THE ST. JOSEPH’S HEALTH SYSTEM BOARD OF DIRECTORS announced the appointment of Dr. Michael Heenan as President and Chief Executive Officer of the St. Joseph’s Health System (SJHS) effective June 2, 2025. He will continue in his current role as President of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH). In this new role, he will work with all SJHS member organizations to ensure the delivery of exceptional, compassionate, high-quality health care and to support the staff, physicians, pastoral care practitioners, volunteers and learners who are the backbone of the system. Dr. Heenan holds a PhD in Business, is an assistant Professor at McMaster University, and has published his work in several peer-reviewed journals. We wish him well in his new responsibilities!
SR. TERESITA MCINALLY, C.S.J., celebrates her 80TH (!) anniversary of religious vows as a Sister of St. Joseph at a Mass of Thanksgiving at Holy Rosary Church in Burlington, at 11a.m. tomorrow. Sister Teresita has been an educator and administrator both in the schools and for her community for years. She is still a vibrant presence in Burlington and on the Highway to Brantford, and keeps well-informed about former students and their families. She is often seen driving her car headed to meetings or community gatherings. Happy Anniversary Sr. Teresita. Ad multos annos!
MR. PATRICK DALY WILL BE HONOURED by the Diocese of Hamilton and the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board for his 40 years as a Catholic School Board Trustee, 33 of them as HWCDS Board Chair – a remarkable commitment of faith and service! A Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated at 4:30 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King, Hamilton, followed by a reception in McNally Hall.
DOMINY WILLIAMS AND ANNE LAMANES recently attended the burial of Sister Gabriella Petoniak, Sister of Social Service, at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Burlington. Sister died on December 30th, at the age of 101. She was instrumental in arranging, with Dominy and Anne, the transfer of the S.S.S. archives to the care of the Bishop Farrell Library and Archives. THE BISHOP’S CHARITIES INVITATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT took place at the Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville on Wednesday. Two of the 30 teams tied (at 12 under par) for top prize, so the winner was decided by a friendly coin toss! DeMazenod Door Outreach at St. Patrick Parish in Hamilton was the overall winner of the tourney. A cheque for a whopping $125,000.00 will assist with expenses for their important ministry of providing nourishing meals for their guests in downtown Hamilton!
