In the previous edition of the Hamilton Priest, I presented some key finding that we should be taking into account when we are providing ministries that promote vocations to the priesthood in our parishes. In this edition, I would like to emphasize the importance of reaching out to men in your parish and inviting them to join the Men’s Discernment Group.
Studies indicate that a high percentage of newly ordained priests report having been invited to consider the priesthood by their pastor, parent, teacher or friend. Sometimes we see someone’s vocation before they see it themselves. Surprisingly, these studies also report that most Catholics say they have not suggested that a young person consider a vocation. In the Gospel of John, Jesus choose Andrew and Peter to be his first disciples by asking them: “What are you looking for?” He then invited them to: “Come and see.” We are also told that Jesus went looking for Philip and said: “Follow me.” In turn, Philip was inspired to bring Nathanael to Jesus by saying to him: “Come and see.” (John 1.43-51). I appeal to you to reach out to our young people and encourage them to consider their vocations. I appeal to you to invite couples to consider the vocation of marriage by saying to them: “What are you looking for?” I appeal to you to invite men and women to consider a vocation to consecrated life in service of God’s kingdom by saying to them: “follow me.” And I appeal to you to invite men to consider a vocation to the priesthood by saying to them: “come and see.”
In particular, I ask you to invite men in your parish to join the Men’s Discernment Group, which meets once a month. Last year two of the members became seminarians and this year three of the members became seminarians. The men who are discerning need your support as their pastor. But they also need to meet other men who are discerning. Peer support is why the Men’s Discernment Group is so important. I also want you to know that several men who are in high school are attending meetings. Moreover, two of our new seminarians just graduated from high school. I realize that, in recent decades, there has been a hesitancy to suggest to a young man that he go to the seminary right out of high school. There are good reasons why a particular young man would benefit from getting a job or attending university before going to the seminary. However, unlike the past, men graduating from high school now have an opportunity to do the propaedeutic year before going to do seminary studies. I believe having a year to focus on spiritual and human formation before focussing on intellectual and pastoral formation in the seminary makes all the difference.
Please ask men in your parish, including those in Grade 11 and 12, to consider joining the Men’s Discernment Group by contacting me. I’m happy to meet with them. But I need you to invite them to “come and see.”
On Saturday, July 20th, Bishop Crosby will be ordaining Deacon Luis Inacio and Deacon William Meehan to the priesthood at 11:00am at the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King. Once again the Vocations Office will be hosting the Ordinandi Breakfast starting at 9:00am at the Chancery Office. Father John Ha is shown in the photo below addressing those who attended last year.
I ask you to invite men in your parish who are or should be discerning a vocation to the priesthood. They would benefit from meeting the men to be ordained as well as other seminarians. One of the men who attended last year subsequently started attending the Men’s Discernment Group and recently joined the diocese as a seminarian.
Please send Monica Verin (vocations@hamiltondiocese.com) the names and contact information for men you have invited and let us know if you will be joining them. The registration deadline is Wednesday, July 17th.
Deacon William Meehan will be ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Crosby on July 20th, 2024. In this video made for the Serra Club Vocations Recognition Dinner he talks about his family background, discernment, formation and how he has been inspired by the priests of the diocese. Please share it with men who are discerning a vocation to the priesthood.
Please visit our social media sites to see what’s happening in vocations ministry in our diocese. More importantly, please share these links with your parishioners:
Information on the next Vocations Office Young Adults Night can always be found in the Diocesan online calendar.
As we collaborate in vocations ministry, I invite you to join me in praying for our young people, that they may heed the call of Christ to live out their vocations as committed members of his Church.
Please pray for vocations!
