100th Anniversary of World Mission Sunday

Date posted on October 14, 2026

On Sunday, October 18, Catholics around the world will celebrate the 100th anniversary of World Mission Sunday, a day dedicated to prayer for missionaries and support for the Church’s evangelizing mission.

Established by Pope Pius XI in 1926, World Mission Sunday reminds Catholics that the Church’s mission extends far beyond their own parish and community. The annual celebration invites the faithful to pray for missionaries, support communities where the Church is growing and renew their commitment to sharing the Gospel.

This year’s theme, chosen by Pope Leo XIV, is “One in Christ, united in mission.” It reflects the Holy Father’s motto, In Illo uno unum, meaning “In the One, we are one,” and highlights the unity of the Church in its mission to proclaim Jesus Christ and share His love with the world.

How to Participate in World Mission Sunday

  1. Pray for missionaries
Remember priests, religious sisters and brothers, lay missionaries and all those who share the Gospel around the world. The faithful are invited to pray for the communities they serve and for the continued growth of the Church’s mission.
  1. Learn about the Church’s mission
World Mission Sunday offers an opportunity to learn more about how the Church proclaims the Gospel and serves communities around the world. Pope Leo XIV’s message for this year’s celebration invites the faithful to reflect on their shared missionary calling.
  1. Give in support of the missions
A second collection will be taken up in parishes on Sunday, October 18. The collection supports the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, one of the four Pontifical Mission Societies, and helps sustain the Church’s evangelizing mission, particularly in communities where resources are limited and the needs are greatest.

Message from Bishop Dabrowski

Bishop Joseph Dabrowski, CSMA, invites the faithful of the Diocese of Hamilton to mark the 100th anniversary of World Mission Sunday through prayer, generosity and renewed commitment to the Church’s missionary work.
