The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (WPCU) is an annual ecumenical celebration observed from January 18 to 25. The theme for 2026 is “There is one body and one Spirit” (Ephesians 4:4).
The recently-launched National Ecumenical Strategy of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) emphasizes “spiritual ecumenism,” described as “the heart of the ecumenical movement.” This includes “praying for and with other Christians, promoting prayer for unity in local parishes, and participation in the planning and leadership of interdenominational prayer services for various intentions—especially that of Christian unity.” This week offers a meaningful opportunity to engage in these practices.
Each year, the theme and draft materials are prepared by Christians from a different host tradition, highlighting the global and shared commitment to Christian unity. For 2026, prayers and reflections were prepared by the Department of Interchurch Relations of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The Canadian Council of Churches, in collaboration with the CCCB, has adapted these resources for the Canadian context.
