On Sunday, March 9, 2025, the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King in Hamilton was alive with joy, reverence, and hope as candidates from across the Diocese gathered for the Rite of Election. The Most Reverend Bishop Douglas Crosby, OMI, served as the principal celebrant for this deeply significant liturgical moment, welcoming those preparing for full initiation into the Catholic Church.
The Rite of Election marks a pivotal point in the spiritual journey of those who have been discerning and preparing through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). During this celebration, catechumens — those who have not yet been baptized — publicly express their desire for baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist. Surrounded by godparents, sponsors, family, and parish representatives, they affirm their readiness to fully enter into life with Christ.
The Significance of the Book of the Elect
One of the most moving parts of the Rite of Election is the signing of the Book of the Elect. This symbolic act is not merely ceremonial; it is a tangible expression of faith. Each catechumen’s name is written in the book, signifying their official enrolment among the Elect — those chosen to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil, which will take place this coming Saturday, April 19, 2025.
By signing their names, the catechumens publicly affirm their decision to walk with Christ. Let us continue to pray for the Elect of 2025 as they journey toward the new life that awaits at the Easter Vigil.
