A NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS, sponsored by the Institute for Catholic Education, begins on Wednesday, June 15th, and concludes on Friday, June 24th, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. An ancient form of prayer in the Catholic tradition, a novena consists of nine consecutive days of prayer leading up to a particular feast day during which a blessing or grace is sought. Students in Catholic schools learn about this form of devotion in the Grade 6 Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ program during Unit 5. You can access the Novena online here. We are grateful for the gift of publicly funded Catholic education in the Province of Ontario!

A FINE PARTNERSHIP HAS DEVELOPED between Cathedral High School and the DeMazenod Door at St. Patrick Parish, Hamilton, over the years. More recently, that partnership has intensified. Food grown in the high school greenhouse, planted by Cathedral students, was donated to the DeMazenod Door Farm. In 2021, all 200 seedlings – beans, tomatoes, zucchini and more – were transplanted to the farm where they grew to provide food for those who come to DeMazenod Door. This year the horticulture class will transplant the seedlings themselves and tend the farm on a weekly basis, providing hands-on opportunities to learn about regenerative and low impact farming methods. Add hens and bees and you get eggs and honey! A mutually beneficial partnership indeed!

CATHEDRAL HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL, Mark Daly, has had it in his mind from day one to celebrate the history and the legacy of Catholic students who attended the flagship school! Teacher, historian and artist Vince Lepore spearheaded a Historic Mural and Alumni Wall of Distinction featured on the walls of the school. It was a labour of love! Years were spent researching and accumulating archival documents! The mural is a testament to all that can be accomplished through Catholic education when we work together! An amateur video of the wall is available here. If you want to visit the Cathedral Wall of Distinction in person, email Mr. Lepore at leporev@hwcdsb.ca. Congratulations on a remarkable project!
