Highlights from 2020 Rite of Election

On Sunday, February 23rd and Sunday, March 1st, 2020, His Excellency, Bishop Douglas Crosby, O.M.I., D.D, presided at the Rite of Election at both the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate in Guelph and the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King in Hamilton. During these liturgies, over 150 Catechumens were invited to inscribe their names in the Book of the Elect. They were joined by Godparents, sponsors, team members, family, friends, parishioners and parishes alike from all parts of the diocese.

The Bishop is the presider of the solemn rite, which is the focal point of the Church’s concern for Catechumens as they enter their final period of preparation for baptism. As Bishop Crosby shared in his homily, this step is called ‘election’ because the acceptance made by the Church is founded on the election by God, in whose name the Church acts.

This step is also a pledge of fidelity by the Catechumens when they inscribe their names in the Book of the Elect, which lists those who have been chosen for initiation. Both liturgies were very moving celebrations, as well as opportunities for others who have made the same choices about their faith to meet and join in prayer together.

Thank you to the RCIA Teams and the Pastors of Parishes for your participation in this year’s Rite of Election.
