Diocese of Hamilton Award: Fabiola Alvarez
The Diocese of Hamilton award is presented to a graduating student who has attained high academic proficiency, and who exemplifies Catholic leadership qualities, Christian values, and a commitment to service in the community.
This year's recipient from St. Jerome's University is Fabiola Alvarez. Fabiola is an outstanding student, a remarkable mentor, role model, and leader, and an exceptionally generous and compassionate member of the St. Jerome’s community.
The accolades for Fabiola provided by her nominators testify to the wide range of her talents. Described as committed, confident, and compassionate, Fabiola has distinguished herself through her dedication to many aspects of community life, her exceptionally strong academic record, and her innate capacity to forge a sense of connection and belonging in others. Fabiola’s kindness and community-minded focus have had a profound impact on others; she “makes every person she meets feel appreciated, and she cares so deeply about her interactions.”
Fabiola’s many achievements include academic excellence; for several terms, she has earned a place on the Faculty of Arts Dean’s Honours List. In athletics, too, Fabiola has excelled. As part of the University of Waterloo’s Varsity Rugby team, she was awarded the prestigious Academic All-Canadian student award for integrating academic excellence and varsity sport. At St. Jerome’s, Fabiola’s contributions are astonishingly numerous. They include Frost Leader, Student Activities team member, Frost Leader Advisor, Assistant Activities Coordinator, Residence Don, Community Advisor, Exchange and Graduate Student Orientation Leader and Language Teaching Assistant.
Fabiola’s nominators agree that Fabiola’s presence continues to enrich St. Jerome’s University: “She has dedicated so much time, care and compassion to this community, and her legacy will live on through the interactions she has had with others.”
