Letter to Msgr. Michel Aupetit regarding the devastating fire of Notre Dame Cathedral
April 16, 2019
Son Excellence Msgr. Michel Aupetit
Archevêque de Paris
In the name of the Clergy and Parishioners of the Diocese of Hamilton (in Ontario, Canada), I offer sincerest sympathy and the promise of prayers following the devastating fire that destroyed so much of the beautiful, historic, and iconic Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral yesterday. The images of the fire were gut-wrenching! We too felt something of the grief you must be experiencing today. Such an overwhelming loss!
At the same time, we have begun the holiest week of the Church’s calendar year during which we remember the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. We know the story does not stop at His death – the God of life and love raises Jesus to new life – the Paschal mystery! It is our hope!
May that very hope provide you and the people of Paris with some degree of solace and strength! May the Easter fire, which will burn at every Catholic Church around the world at the Easter vigil on Saturday evening, be a reminder of the light of Christ overcoming the destruction and death of sin, calling us to new life!
May Notre-Dame de Paris be the centre-point of the renewal of HOPE for a world sorely in need!
Sincerely in the Risen Christ and Notre Dame!
