CONGRATULATIONS AND GOOD WISHES TO THE JESUITS IN CANADA who began a new chapter in their Canadian history this week. On July 31st, Feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the Founder of the Society of Jesus, the English and French Provinces in Canada united to become one Province - the Jesuit Province of Canada. Father Eric Oland, S.J., is the first Provincial of the new Province, and Father Gilles Mongeau, S.J., is the Socius. The Jesuit community in Guelph joined other Jesuits in the area in Pickering to celebrate the new reality. May God bless your many good works, Fathers and Brothers – including your ministries here in the Diocese of Hamilton!

FATHER BRENDAN MCGRATH has been appointed Director of Pastoral Care for the Extraordinary Form (Latin Mass). The appointment is effective on September 1, 2018. He will reside at the Parish Residence in Linwood, Ontario. We thank him for accepting to provide pastoral care for this ministry.

FATHER MARIAN GIL, OMI, upon presentation by his Provincial Superior, has been appointed Pastor of St. Teresa of Avila Parish, Kitchener, effective September 1, 2018. Father Gil, who is completing a sabbatical, served most recently as Provincial Superior of Assumption Province of the Oblates (the Polish Province). We look forward to welcoming him among us.

FATHER ROBERT HETU IS HOME following knee surgery in late July. His long-awaited operation was on July 23rd, followed by a few days of rehabilitation. He is residing at St. Margaret Mary Parish in Hamilton, which provides accessible opportunity for him to get out and walk on relatively flat surfaces. We wish him a rapid and full recovery.

THE CATHOLIC CHILDREN’S AID SOCIETY OF HAMILTON mourns the loss of Nemesia Fragata, who served the agency for almost 40 years as a Family Services Worker and who died suddenly. She broke her leg earlier in the month, requiring surgery. When she got up in hospital to walk following the operation, a blood clot caused a massive stroke from which she did not recover. Her colleagues remembered her and prayed for her on Tuesday. We offer our sympathy to her family and to the agency!

SISTER ANNE ANDERSON, CSJ, CHAIR OF THE BOARD of the St. Joseph’s Health System announced mid-July that Dr. Tom Steward has accepted the position of CEO of SJHS and Niagara Health. He began his new duties on August 1st. He is an internationally recognized healthcare executive, academic and physician leader who brings both a deep commitment to the mission of compassionate care and service, and a wealth of experience, energy and enthusiasm. May God bless this new chapter in his life!

THANK YOU FOR EXPRESSIONS OF SYMPATHY on the death of Father Chris Rushton, OMI, earlier this week! Father Chris arrived in Hamilton late in August 2016, from Vancouver, where he had suffered a medical downturn in January of that year. Soon upon arrival he was admitted to Juravinski Cancer Centre where they treated a serious lung ailment. In December of 2016, the Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God and their Good Shepherd Ministries accepted him at Emmanuel Hospice, where he was well cared for by the staff for a-year-and-a-half. His health deteriorated this July. Visitation takes place tonight at St. Patrick Parish in Hamilton, beginning at 7:00 p.m., with prayers at 8:30 p.m. He will be buried at the Oblate Cemetery in Arnprior, Ontario, following a funeral Mass at Holy Canadian Martyrs Parish in Ottawa, on Tuesday morning. May he rest in peace!

Our Lady of the Annunciation, pray for us!   Ex corde, + Douglas, OMI
