Emergency Relief Campaign - Myanmar Crisis Relief Fund
On August 25th, violence broke out between the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (AARSA) and the Myanmar Army in Rakhine State, a northern region of Myanmar. Families from Muslim Rohingya minority had to flee with such urgency that they were forced to leave behind belongings and resources.
The refugees fled to the closest border and one of the worlds poorest countries - Bangladesh. Over 604,000 people have sought refuge there since August. The overwhelming arrival of people have made it very difficult for the country to support both the refugees and it's own citizens. In addition to the 600,000 plus refugees more than 300,000 Bangladeshi people have also been impacted.
The stats are shocking and the need for support is urgent. The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace-Caritas Canada has launched an emergency call for help. On October 31st, the Canadian Government announced it would match all admissible donations made between August 25th and November 28th, to the Myanmar Crisis Relief Fund. This will help to bring food, clean water and other emergency relief resources to the refugees still waiting at the border, those who have sought refuge in Bangladesh as well as the Bangladeshi people also requiring support.
