On Sunday, February 28th, the Diocese of Hamilton celebrated its 160th Anniversary at the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King. The 11:00a.m. Mass hosted a variety of special guests, including His Grace, Archbishop Luigi Bonazzi, the Apostolic Nunzio of Canada, who preached at Mass during his first official visit to the Diocese. Also present was Dr. Kevin Smith, who was honoured as a Knight of St. Gregory. The Papal Bulls, commemorating both the establishment of the Diocese and the appointment of Most Reverend John Farrell as the first bishop of the Diocese of Hamilton, were on display during the event and can now be found at the Bishop Farrell Archives.

The Diocese was officially established on February 29th, 1856 by Pope Pius IX in order to meet the needs of a rapidly growing Catholic ommunity. The Diocese of Hamilton has flourished through the leadership of its Bishops and the faith of its clergy, religious communities, and dedicated parishioners.

We invite you to look at the photos from the 160th Anniversary Mass below.
