Photos from Pope Francis' Lenten Retreat

Below are photos taken last week at the retreat attended by Pope Francis. Notice that Cardinal Ouellet is seated beside the Pope in one photo. The retreat was a silent retreat – even on the anniversary of the Pope's election! One of the participants said it felt "odd travelling in a bus with the Pope and outriders!" The bus caused "occasional havoc on the roads."

At the end of his retreat, Pope Francis said he and his closest collaborators at the Vatican "want to follow Jesus more closely, without losing hope in his promises and without losing a sense of humor."

Cardinal Marc Ouellet (seated to the right of Pope Francis) was the Metropolitan Archbishop of Quebec since 2002, and in 2010 was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.
