The Diocese of Hamilton Award: Nicole

Nicole Berza of Bishop Reding Secondary School, Halton Catholic District School Board

Over the past four years at Bishop P.F. Reding Catholic Secondary School, Nicole has been a vital contributor in a number of areas.  Her extensive extra-curricular involvement, her high academic achievements and her community involvement has developed her into a strong, caring and well-rounded leader.

During her time at Bishop Reding Nicole has been involved in a number of clubs and groups.  She has been a static member of the BR Players each year and has also performed in our annual talent show.  Her leadership at BR has also been extensive.  She has been a consistent retreat leader for our Religion classes, and in grade 11 was selected to be a part of LINK crew, a mentorship program that helps grade 9’s acclimatize to high school.  She has also volunteered to be a peer tutor for younger grades struggling with school subjects. This year, Nicole was also one of the senior students chosen by a committee of teachers to be part of the Leaders in Black program.  This program rewards senior students who exhibit leadership qualities in a variety of areas and who have made a positive contribution to the school over their three years.  As part of this select program, the participants are given the opportunity to develop their leadership style and are able to explore the concept of servant leadership. Furthermore, these students act as ambassadors within the Milton community, putting their leadership into community related initiatives. Nicole’s strong academics and teamwork demonstrate a mature student who is admired and looked up to by younger students. She was an obvious choice. She shows tremendous dedication and integrity when dealing with her peers and makes new students feel welcome within our school community.  Furthermore, this year Nicole went on the DREAMS trip, an experience that helps third world nations.

In addition to her school involvement, she has also been active within the Milton community.  She has volunteered for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Milton Stags Basketball Association and is also a regular volunteer within her parish.

All of these experiences have helped to develop Nicole as a confident, empathetic and caring young lady.  Nicole remains humble about her accomplishments.  She is a mature student with a very bright future and she will inspire others wherever she goes.  She truly embodies the concept of servant leadership.
