160th Anniversary of the
Diocese of Hamilton

On February 29th the Diocese of Hamilton will celebrate its 160th Anniversary!  The Diocese was established in 1856 by Pope Pius IX as a division of the Archdiocese of Toronto, in order to meet the needs of a rapidly growing Catholic community in Ontario.  The Diocese of Hamilton has flourished through the leadership of its Bishops and the faith of its clergy, religious communities, and dedicated parishioners.

World Day for Consecrated Life

Year of Consecrated Life

Tuesday, February 2nd is the World Day for Consecrated Life and the closing of the Year for Consecrated Life. 

In 1997, Pope Saint John Paul II instituted a day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life. This celebration is attached to the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Religious sisters, nuns, brothers, religious priests, and monks consecrate their lives through their profession of religious vows. Single lay people may also choose vows of holy dedication as consecrated virgins.  Those who choose to live a consecrated life do so as a commitment to the tenets of chastity, poverty, and obedience. The Year of Consecrated Life was officially inaugurated on November 29, 2014, and ends with the celebration of a special Mass by His Holiness, Pope Francis, at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

We are all invited to reflect on the role of consecrated life in the Church and to pray for those who have made this commitment.

Pope John Paul II, Vita Consecrata (The Consecrated Life) (1996) – Apostolic Exhortation reflecting on the gift and mission of the consecrated life at the service of the Church.

Carol Schuck Scheiber, ed., Religious Life and You (1996) – A compilation of articles from Vision Magazine that explore topics related to vocations, discernment, and consecrated life. 

Elizabeth M. Smyth, ed., Changing Habits: Women’s Religious Orders in Canada (2007) – A collection of articles on the history of women’s religious orders in Canada.
