Pope Francis' Prayer Intentions for June: Eliminate Arms Trade

Pope Francis' Prayer Intentions for June

National Leaders: That National Leaders may firmly commit themselves to ending the arms trade which victimizes so many innocent people.

In a time when wars are breaking out, many claiming to be in the name of peace, Pope Francis calls us to pray together for national leaders to put an end to arms trades.

World arms trades are reaching over $100 billion with 58% of those shares coming from the United States and Russia. The U.S. alone deals arms to 96 countries.

Addressing the U.S. Congress, Pope Francis said we need “to end the many armed conflicts throughout our world. Here we have to ask ourselves: Why are deadly weapons being sold to those who plan to inflict untold suffering on individuals and society? Sadly, the answer, as we all know, is simply for money: money that is drenched in blood, often innocent blood. In the face of this shameful and culpable silence, it is our duty to confront the problem and to stop the arms trade.” (Apostleship of Prayer, May 31, 2017)
